Considering the costs to repair mold damage can range upwards of $30,000 it’s no wonder we all dread dealing with water damage in our homes. Repairing water damage can be expensive and time consuming. When doing so, it is best to start with an inside out approach in evaluating the cause, but an outside in multi-phased process is best when conducting repairs.
For example, if water is entering your basement excluding a plumbing issue, it’s most likely coming from outside your home. Determining if the water is coming from above or below ground can be a little more complex. Commonly, water in the basement can be attributed to poor grading around the house or a lack of functioning gutters and downspouts. In a 1″ rain event 1250 gallons will fall on a 2000 sq.ft. roof so its easy to see how some of this can end up in the basement if you lack proper drainage or functioning downspouts. Corrective actions should be aimed at these more common causes first.
